Who will edit Wiki’s editors?
Sydney Morning Herald – Aug 24, 2007
Last year someone edited the Wikipedia entry for the SeaWorldtheme parks in the United States to change all mentions of “orcas”to “killer whales” insisting this was a more accurate name for thespecies. There was another unexplained edit: a critical paragraph aboutSeaWorld’s “lack of respect toward its orcas” had disappeared. Bothchanges it turns out originated at a computer at Anheuser-BuschSeaWorld’s owner. Dozens of similar examples of insider editing came to light lastweek through WikiScanner a new website that traces the source ofmillions of changes to Wikipedia the popular online encyclopediathat anyone can edit. The site wikiscanner… gr created by a computer sciencegraduate and hacker Virgil Griffith 24 cross-references anedited entry on Wikipedia with the owner of the computer networkwhere the change originated using the internet protocol address ofthe editor’s network. The address information was already available on Wikipedia butthe new site makes it much easier to connect those numbers with thenames of network owners. Since Wired News first wrote about WikiScanner last weekinternet users have spotted plenty of interesting changes toWikipedia by people at non-profit groups and government entitiessuch as the CIA. Many of the most obviously self-interested editshave originated from company networks. Griffith who likes to refer to himself as a “disruptivetechnologist” said he was certain that many more examples ofself-interested editing would come out in the next few weeks”because the data set is just so huge”. More help is on the way.

So perhaps shouldn’t be surprised to hear that in an election year there has been more than the usual amount of editing of federal politicians’ entries by government employees. ne of the changes which was traced backed to staff in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet involved removing a reference to Peter Costello’s smirk as Paula Kruger reports. PAULA KRUGER: The world according to Wikipedia is constantly changing. This morning I looked up Peter Costello on the online encyclopedia and found a page that read: “Peter Howard Costello born 14th of August 1957 Australian politician”.
