Companies routinely probe the Net to make decisions about suppliers and other resources. That means that what the Web says about you can affect how your business grows. Wikipedia offers a glimpse of how dicey all this can be. In one famous case a Wikipedia article on USA Today’s John Seigenthaler Sr. implicated him in the assassinations of John and Robert Kennedy. Had Seigenthaler not come across the article the misinformation might still be there. To its credit Wikipedia has been addressing problems such as this and now contains an article on the Seigenthaler controversy that emerged within its pages.

The age of Wikisense
PRESS TV – Aug 22, 2007
With free information accessible on the Internet this is often made too easy. Therefore one would be well-advised to harbor a constant sense of caution about almost everything one comes across on the Net. The world-famous Wikipedia for one is a free portal to a world of information which started with the normally unattainable vision of unbiased correctness. The site itself defines Wiki as a web-based free content encyclopedia where anyone can compose pages on any subject or edit existing material. The concept was utopian; free knowledge for everyone. It offers helpful general information on millions of subjects but the point is whether we would always be able to read between the lines. Less generous observers have called it a source that records what people think they know with the guarantee of some fatal errors… Any suggestion that President Ahmadinejad’s page was edited by the CIA could be a mere coincidence just doesn’t feel right. The problem is not embodied in Wikipedia itself not even in our complacent acceptance of the existing errors; that is only tragic. The problem is whether seemingly innocent mistakes are part of a system with ulterior motives. Language is a dangerous medium of persuasion which can easily poison minds. Yet we not only forgive Wiki’s little slippages we cannot afford to live without it; simply because there is no better substitute for this multilingual source which offers nearly 8 million articles. It turns up in the first page of anything you google comfortably settling into the world’s top-ten list of most visited sites. After all we live in an age of information where you can sell knowledge but can’t always afford to pay for it.
