Springing to life in the Dead Sea
Manila Bulletin – Dec 22, 2007
The Dead Sea likewise has been the supplier of a wide variety of products from balms for Egyptian mummification to potash for fertilizers. The Dead Sea region is said to weaken the sun?s ultraviolet radiation. Its climate according to Wikipedia (ave. between 32 and 39 degrees Celsius in the summer and 20 to 23 °C in the winter) have made it popular for several types of therapies such as Climatotherapy (a treatment exploiting local climatic features such as temperature humidity sunshine barometric pressure and special atmospheric constituents); Heliotherapy (a treatment that requires the biological effects of the sun?s radiation); Thalassotherapy (a treatment that includes bathing in Dead Sea water and Balneotherapy (a treatment that exploits black mineral mud of the Dead Sea). Research studies revealed that the Dead Sea?s mineral content reduced ultraviolet component of solar radiation and the higher atmospheric pressure present in this place have specific health effects. Persons with reduced respiratory function from diseases such as cystic fibrosis are said to benefit from the increased atmospheric pressure… People with skin disorder psoriasis also benefit from the salt and long periods of sunbathing in the area due to its position below sea level and reduced ultraviolet rays. ver the years however the Dead Sea has been rapidly shrinking because of diversion of incoming water. According to a Wikipedia report the area which has an elevation of 395 meters below sea level in 1970 fell 22 meters to 418 meters below sea level in 2006 reaching a drop rate of 1 meter per year. Some studies bared that the Dead Sea may not entirely disappear but its characteristics are feared to substantially change due to the evaporation that slows down as the surface area decreases and salinity increases. The Dead Sea scrollsAside from the hot springs health spas and resorts that abound in the area the Dead Sea is also popular for the historic scrolls which were unearthed from the caves of nearby Qumran in 1947. The Dead Sea Scrolls composed of the entire Hebrew Bible scriptures (except the book of Esther) found in 11 different caves around Qumran are said to be the greatest discovery in history regarding religion. The Qumran caves are now a protected site and the subject of many research studies by archaeologists.

In practice however it’s safe to say that organizations claiming not to possess formal processes employ a variety of heuristics to project workforce planning decisions into the future. The current Wikipedia. com definition describes rather well if generically what these approaches might look like: A heuristic is a method for helping in the solution of a problem often informal. It is particularly used for a method that usually rapidly leads to a solution that is usually reasonably close to the best possible answer. Heuristics are “rules of thumb” educated guesses intuitive judgments or simply common sense.

Third Test day five as it happened
BBC News – Dec 22, 2007
0755: Eng 229-5 Vaas seizes the sparkling cherry and baffles Prior utterly with three now-you-see-them now-you-don’ts. Groundstaff are gathering by their covers and the clouds are now ominous. From Martin Peters: “Re French Cricket – Wikipedia says: ‘Suggested possibilities include juxtaposition with the English origin of regular cricket. It seems likely that as the game is a lesser version on regular cricket that the name is intended to mock both the game and the French. The name may also have arisen from the similarity of the batting motion to the one used in croquet which while not a French game is sometimes assumed to be French because of its name. ‘”0749: Eng 229-5 Now then. There’s a few dark clouds building out over the sea.

The BBC’s future
guardian.co.uk – Dec 22, 2007
In the past decade in what we might call the internet space the BBC has followed not led. No Napster no iPod no Google no MySpace no YouTube no response to Wikipedia not even a Facebook and amazingly no Joost. A generation is growing up that does not want centrally controlled entertainment. Nor does it want it in half-hour or hourly bytes. The challenge for the BBC post-2012 (Anger and anxiety over corporation’s restructuring plans December 19) is whether it should merge with Channel 4 and in the process adopt its management structure and commissioning process. There is no doubt that the marketplace is ready for an alternative internet-led public-service publisher outlined so successfully by fcom.
