thers turned to social networking site Facebook with New Zealanders around the world using the Internet to unite in their grief. Many updated their site "status" – which is used to signify what they are doing or feeling – to "mourning the death of a national hero" "thinking NZ has lost a true hero" and "[feeling] sad for Sir Ed's family". Vandalism caused online encyclopedia Wikipedia to disable its page about Sir Ed only moments after his death was announced. The semi-protected state of the page will remain in place till Thursday as Wikipedia operators respond to repeated actions which could have included the addition removal or change of information in a deliberate attempt to compromise the integrity of the site. The most common types of vandalism included the addition of obscenities or crude humour page blanking or the insertion of nonsense into articles according to Wikipedia.

“My take on it all is that monkey business and cricket do not mix. My favourite monkey business story demonstrates that. It can be found in Wikipedia. nce upon a time in a village a man appeared and announced to the villagers that he would buy monkeys for $10. The villagers went out to the forest and started catching them. The man bought thousands at $10. As the supply diminished the villagers stopped their efforts.

(The videos are no more Jesus-y than the old “Davey and Goliath” show on Sunday mornings when I was a kid: light entertainment and golden-rule homilies for all Judeo-Christian households. )”The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything” is notably secular – well there’s a speech by the king toward the end that might metaphorically refer to a Higher Power but it’d take a theologian to pluck it out – and it may reflect some corporate streamlining. In 2003 the “Veggie Tales” company was rescued from bankruptcy by Classic Media Holdings which last year was swallowed by the UK-based Entertainment Rights the latter’s focus being in the words of Wikipedia “the exploitation of major children’s characters and brands. ” “Pirates” retains the scruffy slap-happy gooniness that makes the “Veggie Tales” videos go down easy but is the franchise in danger of being pureed into blandness? Beets me. Ty Burr can be reached at.

His philosophy is that Internet searching should be open transparent and democratic. “If you’re relying on people not knowing how the system works you’ve got a big problem” he stated. A trusted network of users similar to those that contribute to Wikipedia will be responsible for discussion and planning of future developments of the project. Wales has cautioned users against expecting too much too soon by stating that they won’t find a Google-killer at wikia. com; people should understand that they are at the early stages of a project building a “Google-quality search engine”.

Irrelevant Jamaican counties
Jamaica bserver – Jan 12, 2008
Then much of the island was still uninhabited and uncharted. It is now 250 years after the creation of Jamaica’s counties and the official Internet encyclopedia entry concerning them is that they are administratively irrelevant. Wikipedia is an ongoing experiment in fact-building but its entry on Jamaica is commendable as is its statement that “Jamaica is divided in 14 parishes which are grouped into three historic counties that have no administrative relevance”. If Britain were still in control of Jamaica these counties would have already been adequately developed into efficient local government administrative entities run by county councils in order to keep pace with the urbanisation and conurbation taking place in all 14 parishes. After all Cornwall in the southernmost and Surrey in the southeast section of modern England are still two well-developed and thriving counties each with its official website. The historic county of Middlesex ceased to be an active English county in 1965 as it became completely absorbed by Greater London a development that started in 1889 when county councils were introduced. However the British county model provides numerous lessons for Jamaica to copy in delivering efficient local government services.
