Netflix chooses Blu-ray over HD DVD
San Francisco Chronicle – Feb 11, 2008
You would have to be to champion a format that isn’t even finished yet! Yippee lets all go and support a format where the only vaguely viable player on the market is a games console. I’ll happily stick with my hd dvd which has been able to do everything from day one with equal or better quality. Posted By: HoggleBoggle | February 11 2008 at 01:10 PMHB – go on wikipedia. com and compare the technical specs to your heart’s content. You might get 100-150% retail when HD-DVD players go bye-bye (e… Based on wikipedia. com Blu-Ray can hold up to 50 GB of data whereas HD DVD can go only up to 15 GB. Thus based on that and many other factors I don’t know how the heck HD DVD held out this long. Ask yourself this based on the above technical information which will have more clarity? If I had to choose to buy either Star Wars in a 15 Gb disk (HD DVD) or in a 50 Gb disk (Blu-ray) and they cost more or less the same which one would you choose?Posted By: confucius_says | February 11 2008 at 01:45 PMI don’t understand the Blu-ray haters’ argument. Both formats deliver 1080p signal – Blu-ray has 2x the storage capacity. I’m neither a Sony fanboy nor a Toshiba critic but with digital media storage capacity is the trump card.

Foolish Book Review: “Wikinomics”
Motley Fool – Feb 11, 2008
Torvalds never meant to get rich from this work; he’s content with having changed the world. As the volume’s name suggests. When anybody and everybody can change the encyclopedia errors should be caught and corrected quickly and the result is a very usable and up-to-date reference work.

Game’s up when fixtures are fixed

And it doesn’t take much to offend China’s State Administration ofRadio Film and Television or their colleagues at the Ministry ofInformation. This pincer movement ensures that the censorship phenomenonknown as The Great Firewall of China remains firmly in place. Wikipedia is banned; YouTube was closed for the duration of theCommunist party conference and Beijing has already made it clear itwill not permit the event that marks their emergence as an economicsuperpower to be spoiled by critics. According to the New York-based ‘Committee To ProtectJournalists’ China jails more reporters than any other country andit is estimated that at least 29 are currently in custody. The Chinese also have a history of slapping vague espionagecharges on journalists of whom they disapprove. I hope the lympics open up a door that never closes again. Butit remains to be seen whether the likes of me will be allowed totell you.

Moms force store to pull ‘Lolita’ bedroom suite for little girls
Dispatch nline – Feb 11, 2008
Staff at the Woolworths retail group were apparently unaware that the name of the bed set was the same as the title of Vladimir Nabokov’s famous novel which told the story of a middle-aged man who became sexually obsessed with his 12-year-old step-daughter. “What seems to have happened is the staff who run the (store’s) website had never heard of Lolita and to be honest no one else here had either. We had to look it up on Wikipedia” a Woolworths spokesperson told The Times. The bed set which included a wooden bed with a pull-out desk and cupboard was intended for girls aged from six years old and retailed for just under R8000 (£395). The campaign was sparked after a mother noticed the product on Woolworths’ website and posted a message on the raisingkids.

com (below)What do these two notices have in common? Plenty. Back when you were a kid spending the afternoon at the community pool remember how you used to hesitate when you glanced at those signs bearing the pool rules — just as you were about to dive head first into the shallow end? If your news or community site allows comments why not put similar notices in a prominent place and format so users will likely notice them and then let their conscience be their guide. From the category of “Yes steal this idea please!” comes this example of how valuable it can be to provide clear concise rules for online comments in exactly the right place. Failing that laser treatment seems a lot easier in the long run. If you’re thinking of the Bates method just Google. Wikipedia quote: Because Bates believed that people who strain to see tend to strain in response to light he suggested exposing the eyes to sunlight to help unlearn that strain. He gave several examples of patients’ vision allegedly improving after having looked directly at the sun which in some situations may be dangerous. Figures in Chapter 17 of Bates’ Perfect Sight Without Glasses show several individuals looking at the Sun "without discomfort" and figure 48 shows somebody "Focussing the Rays of the Sun Upon the Eye of a Patient by Means of a Burning Glass" implying that this is a safe thing to do.
