Jamal delivers blistering set at Jazz Fest
Greeley Tribune – Apr 26, 2008
As further proof Jamal who converted to Islam many years ago gave a blistering set with his trio to kick off the concert. He came out to his introduction waved took his bench and immediately began attacking the keys in the percussive style he’s known for leaving plenty of space in between the notes and yet giving out generous helpings of phrasing in key spots. Wikipedia even reports a rumor that his piano needs to be tuned between sets because of the way he pounds the keys but he doesn’t hammer at them in the manner that made Little Richard or Jerry Lee Lewis famous. He prefers short bursts in between long sweeping passages that would give others carpal tunnel syndrome just by watching. Jamal considers his longtime trio an orchestra even if only three are playing and he had no trouble filling the sparsely decorated stage with his sound a challenging yet straight-ahead and swinging style. He communicated with his supporting drums and bass players with a mere wave of his hand or even a glance the way married couples can send a message in just a glare or a smile. At times the back-and-forth between the three in his hour-long set was what some longtime married couples say to each other in a year.
