Yahoo Goes Full Steam Ahead With ‘open’ Strategy
PC World – May 1, 2008
Initially the Search Monkey API is triggered off the URL. A user would install an application that would look for specific things in the URL and then it would augment the results from that URL using Search Monkey. For example instead of seeing a Wikipedia link and a snippet you could call back to Wikipedia and show a photo get more context about the article maybe even present some of the external links or the edit history whatever would be interesting. So initially it’ll be switched on URLs but later we’ve talked quite a bit about the semantic Web the ability to leverage structured information in the search result itself. So in a Yahoo Local business listing the business can put structured information about itself as part of the result. ther kinds of matching for applications might be triggered by keywords. I might have installed Search Monkey applications that look for results with “travel” as part of the response and it might pull up destination information from across the Web and build up a travel portfolio.

Creating a global brain

census data and MusicBrainz’s massive collection of information about bands and albums. Freebase users can add their own databases to the system and create new connections between different types of data. It might be easiest to think of Freebase as a highly structured database-powered Wikipedia. The main difference is that while Wikipedia stores information in the form of articles Freebase stores specific facts and statistics. It also features an open application programming interface (API) that allows developers to build applications against these data sets and recombine them in interesting ways. A small company called Dipity is using this API to allow people to use the information in Freebase to create timelines of events such as the life of Douglas Adams or the history of film noir. Another company Archiportal combines Freebase with Google Maps to allows users to search through the work of dozens of famous architects.

feel it would be appropriate” she wrote to Buckmaster. The lawsuit cited industry commentators as saying Craigslist could be worth several billion dollars. It ranked as the world's third most valuable Web startup in a list released by Silicon Alley Insider earlier this week: Valued at around $5 billion Craigslist falls behind only Facebook and Wikipedia. Craig Newmark the founder of Craigslist said he would not be interested in a sale even for billions of dollars. “Well we have been saying consistently we are not interested in selling” he said. Newmark says providing a good community service rather than earning a lot more money than a single individual needs is his motivation in continuing his Craigslist work. He declined to speak in detail about the lawsuit.

She had to have known her time was up. It was up like three weeks ago. A friend texted me right after the show to say that Brooke’s Wikipedia page had already been updated to read “Brooke White was eliminated April 30 and erupted into tears. ” I said Ryan Seacrest probably posted that ish three days ago. What was up with her hugging Seacrest for like 5 minutes? Syesha was just kind of standing there like um uh K I guess I’ll leave you two alone? Now it’s your turn Archuleta.

Flock: The browser that makes browsing obsolete
Telegraph.co.uk – May 1, 2008
All have improved over the years: all have added clever little features such as tabbed browsing (which allows you to open multiple web pages within a single window); integrated search bars so we can look something up on Google or Wikipedia without having to go to their home pages; and “extensions” third-party applications that allow you to check the weather listen to music or accelerate the speed of downloads with a single mouse click. All very handy but none address the main problem: browsers are outdated. They are one of the few aspects of the internet that haven’t really changed since the web’s first inception despite the fact our surfing habits have. The explosive growth of social-networking sites that allow us to connect with friends and upload and share videos photos and thoughts to blogs and websites has made the internet a more immersive experience but this is not reflected in the way browsers are designed. They encourage a largely passive experience forcing users to flit between different websites.

The site will also rate sellers according to searchable information about where they live and their PayPal status etc so that newbie sellers are not put off by not having a record of highly rated transactions as eBay sellers have. Chong says he wants the site to be a real community. The catalogue will be Wikipedia-style which people can add to and subtract from. If buyers can’t make the flash work on a camera then they can contact the previous buyer or the community for a solution. Chong added: “The user experience of eBay hasn’t changed for 10 years. It has deteriorated. It has all the characteristics of a market with a dominant player and is ripe for innovation.
