Wikipedia May Make Itself Harder to Edit

Wikipedia may be about to get a little less wacky. Jimmy Wales head honcho and co-founder of the online encyclopedia anyone can edit proposed last week to change the Web site’s entire operating concept so that well not just anyone can edit it. What prompted this change of heart? The fact that Wikipedia briefly killed off both Sen. Ted Kennedy and his longtime colleague Sen. Robert Byrd after they collapsed at President bama’s inauguration luncheon last weekend. The Wikipedia entries on both senators stated they’d died shortly after being taken out of the room. The errors were caught and taken down after about five minutes but they were up long enough for the Washington Post among other media outlets.

The credit appeared in an online biography of the former Ground Force presenter along with other erroneous information including that he’s a trustee of a charity called Gardens For Squats and once auditioned for a role as a psychopathic horticulturalist. Several parts of the entry were in fact the work of hoaxers prompting Wikipedia the web-based encyclopaedia in which the article appeared to apologise. “I’m horrified at the mess this article is in and these errors will be corrected” said a spokesperson. For his part the household favourite dismissed the claims about a Karma Sutra book as “absolute rubbish”. “I’ve got a new series of gardening guides coming out that’s it” he laughed. ne unlikely sounding fact is true however.

The book and magazine and newspaper publishers who have been dismembering their editing staffs have been doing so in desperation for economic motives. What leaves me spluttering is the Wikipediaphiliacs’ apparent belief that such editing doesn’t matter; everything will even itself out. I don’t doubt that many knowledgeable writers have generously contributed to Wikipedia and that many earnest editors monitor the wiki. But Wikipedia lacks the personnel and structure to check and edit effectively. Bad information is posted sound entries are corrupted by ill-informed contributors or saboteurs and the editors cannot keep up. The consequence is that you can trust Wikipedia only when you already know the information. Why would anyone choose to trust a reference that has been repeatedly demonstrated to be unreliable? After false reports of the deaths of Sens.

Most likely you have less than a week to complete this convoluted tortuous task. You start to grab your keys and notebook to hit the library but too bad it closed half an hour ago. Then suddenly a glorious revelation dawns on you: Wikipedia of course! Frantically you type Francisco’s name into the search menu and-behold! Before your eyes (and in a time span of about. 004 seconds) appears three pages of sagacious information about the Spanish painter; including his biography significant accomplishments and major works. You’re about ready to kiss the monitor (but hopefully refrain). You ease back into your chair and reflect on how smart you are for saving yourself the long exasperating trip to the library and avoiding the complicated Dewey-decimal system. Jimmy Donal Wales notorious for his role in creating Wikipedia once idealized “Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge.

The vandals changed the listings for Senators Ted Kennedy and Robert Byrd to say that they’d died when they hadn’t. Until now Wikipedia has adopted a model of communal editing allowing any user to alter its content. Its proposed regime would require all edits to be approved by trusted users. But some devotees say that would undermine what the site is all about.
