Wikipedia’s ld-Fashioned Revolution
Wall Street Journal
It nearly put the Encyclopaedia Britannica out of business. Last week Microsoft announced that it will close Encarta down. Encarta could not compete with Wikipedia which plays by different rules using the online medium to beat earlier encyclopedias at their own mission. Created and maintained by anonymous people around the world Wikipedia is by far the biggest and most popular encyclopedia ever. Despite being created by amateurs it has the potential to become the most professional. This may be a startling claim. There are infamous inaccuracies such as the mischief-maker who edited the profile of a well-known journalist to say he’d been accused of assassinating the Kennedys.

Encyclopaedia Britannica gets online overhaul

It’s a bid by Britannica to remain relevant at a time when the world’s most popular encyclopedia the 8-year-old Web site Wikipedia is written entirely by amateur experts. The new version of Britannica nline set to debut this summer will emulate the Wikipedia concept by letting subscribers make changes to any article ranging from minor edits to near-total rewrites. But Britannica President Jorge Cauz scoffs at the idea that he’s merely imitating his giant online rival. ”I don’t believe it’s accurate to say that Britannica and Wikipedia are becoming more similar” he said. While Wikipedia is written and edited by amateurs who often work anonymously Britannica nline articles will be overseen by professional editors.

Letting Wales’s chums anywhere near search decision would be suicide for anyone who wants information. Wales’ inner circle of drones will almost certainly give higher priority to Wikipedia and sites that have been enthusiastic backers of his empire. As for competition Yahoo does not search news as effectively as Google and Microsoft’s search engine has not found any useful links for us for years. Last year Cuil claimed to be a smart way to build a deep index of the Web without needing millions to build sprawling data centres. However it didn’t work very well either. The problem for those that want to take on Google is not because it is big.

And many students agree with that assessment the story says. James Côté a University of Western ntario professor said the online survey of about 2000 professors and university librarians conducted by the ntario Confederation of University Faculty Associations confirms recent research. "It's a wider societal issue where leisure is very much valued and work habits are not necessarily reinforced in the way that they were in the past" he's quoted as saying. "The work ethic is not what it used to be.

He announced the decision to "close the doors" on the project in a blog post. Wikia Search "has not been enjoying the kind of success that we hoped for" said Mr Wales. He blamed the recession for his decision to withdraw funding but promised to continue as a "cheerleader" for alternatives to Google.
