The dog ate my Wikipedia citations

A governor or public official that lies and cheats a financier or corporate executive that commits fraud; all should accountable. Public pressure should side with honesty and honor. So why is Hyperion Books so casual about author and journalist Chris Anderson using unattributed passages – closely mirroring material from Wikipedia and other sources – in his soon-to-be-released book “Free: The Future of a Radical Price. ” Anderson is no novice. He is editor-in-chief of Wired Magazine and his previous book “The Long Tail” became influential in business circles. Yet now in a simple blog post he has confirmed the use of unattributed material by saying it was his “screw-up. ” His explanation: That in the “rush” to finish the book credits were omitted and that passages in question “were mostly on the margins of the book’s focus mostly on historical asides.

It was anunfortunate mistake and we are working with the author to correctthese errors both in the electronic edition before it posts and in allfuture editions of the book. The lack of attribution may indeed have been a combination of mistake and lack of oversight. But as one commenter on Gawker lamented "Can't decide which is more embarrassing — failing to cite Wikipedia as a source or using Wikipedia as a source. "Wikipedia is one of the resources Anderson lauds — in "The Long Tail" he called it a phenomenon. In this one he writes "there is the amazing 'gift economy' of Wikipedia" later explaining "Wikipedia makes no money at all but because an incomparable information resource is now available to all at no cost our own ability to make money armed with more knowledge is improved. " The whole point of Anderson's "Free: The Past and Future of a Radical Price" is to explore what he calls "the paradox of Free" in which "people are making lots of money and charging nothing. " Anderson's hardcover costs $26.

Duke Chronicle
jpg” >Although many question the accuracy of its entries Wikipedia is often the first source Web surfers turn to when seeking information from the factual to the abstract-and those wishing to learn more about Duke are no exception. In recent years the user-written user-edited online encyclopedia has become a global source of information challenging even the most prominent encyclopedias. Wikipedia provides countless articles on a wide range of topics and concisely summarizes the information. Duke’s Wikipedia page is a useful summary of information that people often use first when learning about the University. Michael Schoenfeld vice president for public affairs and government relations said his office checks the Duke article every day though the page is mostly edited by the Wikipedia community.

“This is entirely my own screwup and will be corrected in the ebook and digital forms before publication” Anderson wrote. “VQR rightly spotted that I failed to cite Wikipedia in some passages…This was sloppy and inexcusable but the part I feel worst about is that in our failure to find a good way to cite Wikipedia as the source we ended up not crediting it at all. ”So was Jaquith satisfied?“I?m not comfortable saying whether I was satisfied with his response” Jaquith writes. ” I?ve got my reporter cap on and it?s not my job to be satisfied or not.
