Twenty minutes later El nline reported Jackson’s hospitalization. But still no word from big media. Wikipedia – the community-edited encyclopedia – cited the El nline article at 2112 GMT. Finally seven minutes after that the French news agency Agence France Presse quoted TMZ. com and El nline as saying that Jackson had been rushed to hospital. A minute later TMZ. com was saying that Jackson was dead; the same time as Thomson Reuters another news agency quoted the Los Angeles Times website as saying Jackson had been rushed to hospital.

It was anunfortunate mistake and we are working with the author to correctthese errors both in the electronic edition before it posts and in allfuture editions of the book. The lack of attribution may indeed have been a combination of mistake and lack of oversight. But as one commenter on Gawker lamented "Can't decide which is more embarrassing — failing to cite Wikipedia as a source or using Wikipedia as a source. "Wikipedia is one of the resources Anderson lauds — in "The Long Tail" he called it a phenomenon. In this one he writes "there is the amazing 'gift economy' of Wikipedia" later explaining "Wikipedia makes no money at all but because an incomparable information resource is now available to all at no cost our own ability to make money armed with more knowledge is improved. " The whole point of Anderson's "Free: The Past and Future of a Radical Price" is to explore what he calls "the paradox of Free" in which "people are making lots of money and charging nothing. " Anderson's hardcover costs $26.

Both TMZ and the Los Angeles Times suffered outages. Google believed the millions of people searching “Michael Jackson” meant it was under attack. Twitter reported a crash as did Wikipedia at 3:15 PDT. The Wikimedia Foundation reported nearly one million visitors to the Michael Jackson biography within one hour probably the most visitors in a one-hour period to any article in Wikipedia’s history. There will be a private family service at 10:00 a. on Tuesday July 7 at Forest Lawn – Hollywood Hills Cemetery in Los Angeles followed by a public memorial at the Staples Center where Jackson rehearsed on June 23 two days before he died.
